Curling 101 - Adult Learn to Curl Program

Curling 101 - Adult Learn to Curl Program 2025

Interested in learning to curl? Here is your chance. At the beginning of every curling season, the Fegus Curling Club holds a Curling 101 course based on Curling Canada's Getting Started for Adults (www.curling.ca). The goal is for novice curlers to develop basic skills through weekly instruction and put them to use in game settings towards the end of the program.

When: The next session is scheduled to begin on October 11. The course runs for 6 weeks on Saturday mornings from 9:00am to 11:00am until November 15.

Intended Audience: The program is intended for adults of all ages with little or no curling experience. It is also ideal for novice curlers who would like to further develop their skills. The program is available to members and non-members. If you know that you will not be able to deliver a rock in the traditional manner due to hip, knee or back issues please sign up for our Stick Curling Instruction Program which runs on Sunday evenings 7-9PM from Oct 19 to Nov 16 with the same basic curriculum using a stick delivery.

Curriculum: The first four to five weeks feature learn-to-curl instruction from certified and trained volunteer instructors. The main topics include safety, delivery, grip and release, brushing, layout of a curling sheet, rules and etiquette, and basic strategy. As skill sets develop, we will progress to playing practice games, overseen by instructors and experienced curlers. This year at the end of our sessions Our Season Opener Fun Bonspiel will be held on Nov 22- a fun filled experience for every new curler. Be sure to mark this date on your calendar and watch for the sign-up sheet at the club for a true bonspiel experience.

Equipment: A helmet or protective curling/figure skating head band is recommended but not mandatory. Options are headbands/helmets that protect the back of your head (e.g., curling, skateboard, snowboard, or hockey helmet). You will also need a clean pair of indoor running shoes that you keep for curling only. Loose fitting pants and a warm sweater or jacket are recommended. FCC will loan you all other equipment (slip-on/step-on sliders, grippers, and brooms). If you have access to equipment, please feel free to bring your own.

Cost: The program is free to current FCC members. Non-members pay $100 (tax included). Pay by credit card or e transfer with the on-line registration process. Payment is required to guarantee your spot. You will need to sign a Waiver of Liability Document and a Concussion Code Agreement when you complete your registration on line. “Try It Nights” on Saturday Oct. 11 and Oct 18 will provide a great lead into our Learn to Curl Program.

About The Club

The Fergus Curling Club was established in 1834 and has operated every year since making it the oldest continuously operating curling club in Ontario.

We are a four sheet club of 260 members. There is a club room, bar, kitchen, and locker rooms. Much of the work around the club is voluntary with the exception of ice-making and caretaking.

The club is managed by a nine person board of directors elected annually from the general membership.
