Sweetheart Bonspiel
2020

The Sweethearts Bonspiel has been up for competition for 45 years and this year teams competed again for it on Feb 15 at the Fergus Curling Club. Held near Valentines Day which is always the theme with games starting Friday evening and continuing through Saturday many people come back year after year to see old friends and meet new ones.  This year it was win by a team from Wingham. Members of the team are L to R: skip Ben Shane, lead Hillarie Bridell, vice Olivia Beines and second Kyle Forster. The hosts who did a splendid job again this year are on the ends with Jennifer Gleva on the left and Jeff Gleva on the right.

Friday and Saturday Feb. 8 and 9 was a very exciting time at the Fergus Curling Club. The annual Sweetheart Bonspiel was held with a full compliment of curlers and food was to die for. The theme for this year was super heroes and a number of people dressed up in the their favourite super hero costume. Curlers attended from Paris, Alliston, Brantford and beyond. Winning some lovely prizes, the winners of the day were from the Elora Curling Club L to R: Drew Mazerolle, Tina Mazerolle, Dong Lee, and Tara Lee along with Jeff and Jennifer Gleva who hosted the whole bonspiel presented the trophy. There were two more events that took place on the Friday night that was of note at the club. First of all there was a proposal on the ice during a game of marriage from Tim Hitchcock to Shannon Curran and of course she said yes. Tim delivered the stone seen here down the ice to Shannon with ring in hand and while he was on his knees her proposed. They have been going together for 15 years and long time members of the curling club and this was their special night. The third exciting moment occurred when a local team skipped by Carl Gray from the Fergus Club obtained the highest number of points anyone can get in an end of curling and that is 8. They didn't really realized the feat until they looked at the position of the rocks after the end was over and only then saw it was an 8 ender. This usually never happens in the life of a curler.

The premier bonspiel at the Fergus Curling Club is always played around Valentines Day and is aptly named " Sweetheart Bonspiel". This year on Feb. 10 the theme was movies and the best costumes was this team from Fergus and the movie was of course M.A.S.H. L to R: Debbie Clark, Brian Clark, Linda Baker and Mike Baker. The big winners of the day for their curling were from Newmarket Curling Club and Burlington Curling Club L to R: Margaret Mousseau playing lead, Dave Potter playing second, Linda Potter vice-skipping and Dan Mousseau skip. The organizers were Jennifer and Jeff Gleva on the ends who got a full compliment of 96 curlers to participate.

2017

For over 40 years the Sweetheart Bonspiel at the Fergus Curling Club has been in existence and is still going strong. On Feb. 11 a full bonspiel of 24 teams coming from Oakville, Burlington, St. Catherines, Paris as well as local clubs attended this year. Some of them have been coming for over 15 years. This is a two day bonspiel, one only a few in the area to have that distinction. This year the theme besides being a Valentines one was to celebrate Canada's 150 Anniversary. This is one of the earliest events to celebrate this in Centre Wellington. Organizer Rachael Luther did a fine job of seeing that went according to plan. The meal was catered to by Fraberts Fine Foods in Fergus. The winner this year was a local team from the Fergus Club skipped by Carl Gray with 51 points only 1/2 a point better that the team of Mark Landoni.
