Stick Curling Instruction Program 2025
Interested in learning to curl but have back, knee or hip issues that prevent you from taking on the challenges of a normal curling stone delivery process. Here is your chance. Using a stick delivery, you can learn to play this wonderful game of curling in spite of these problems. If you are already curling, you can convert to the stick delivery, so you do not have to give up the game you love. The goal is for novice and experienced curlers to develop basic stick delivery skills through weekly instruction and put them to use in game settings towards the end of the program.
When: The next session is scheduled to begin on October 15. The course runs for 5 weeks on Sunday evenings from 7:00pm to 9:00pm until November 16.
Intended Audience: The program is intended for adults with little or no curling experience with challenges requiring an alternative delivery option. It is also ideal for curlers who would like to convert to the stick delivery and develop their skills. The program is available to members and non-members of the Fergus Curling Club.
Curriculum: The first 2-3 weeks feature learn-to-curl instruction from certified and trained volunteer instructors. The main topics include safety, stick delivery and release, brushing, layout of a curling sheet, rules and etiquette, and basic strategy. As skill sets develop, we will progress to playing practice games, overseen by instructors and experienced curlers. This year at the end of our sessions Our Season Opener Fun Bonspiel will be held on Nov 22- a fun filled experience for every new curler. Be sure to mark this date on your calendar and watch for the sign-up sheet at the club for a true bonspiel experience.
Equipment: A helmet or protective curling/figure skating head band is recommended but not mandatory. Options are headbands/helmets that protect the back of your head (e.g., curling, skateboard, snowboard, or hockey helmet). You will also need a clean pair of indoor running shoes that you keep for curling only. Dressing in layers for warmth with sweaters and loose jackets for freedom of movement is recommended. FCC will loan you all other equipment (delivery sticks, grippers, and brooms). If you have access to equipment, please feel free to bring your own.
Cost: The program is free to current FCC members. Non-members pay $100 (tax included). Pay by credit card or e transfer with the on-line registration process. Payment is required to guarantee your spot. You will need to sign a Waiver of Liability Document and a Concussion Code Agreement when you complete your registration on line. “Try It Nights” on Saturday Oct. 11 and Oct 18 will provide a great lead into our Learn to Curl Program.
